Symphyomyrtus, more prone to insect attack. Mountains of Victoria. Broadly conical when young, grows rapidly, cold hardy to -12C, best in regular rainfall at higher altitude. Unthrifty by age 20 at low altitude in warmer districts, but yields a lot of firewood. Low tolerance to drought. 700-1750mm rainfall, not for coastal sites, easily killed by fire. Grows to 1300m altitude, and in Westland on well drained soils. Timber non-durable used for flooring, furniture, saws well, needs careful drying. Sheds long strips of bark, coppicing less reliable. Recommend planting in early Spring after chance of frosts.

Australia, largest trees in Tasmania (to 90m), 5 subspecies, prefers regular rainfall, but drought tolerant in Marlborough, for shade & shelter on dry sites, much of the trunk white, sheds ribbons of bark, good coppicing, forms a lignotuber. Cold down to -15C, Timber not widely used, difficult to season, low strength,but easy to work for indoor use, good firewood. Large tall white trunk ornamental in the landscape. Plant in Spring.

Britain, Europe, Caucasus & Alborz Mts. (Iran). Broadly columnar, deciduous tree with stout greenish-grey shoots with jet black buds. Leaves with 7-13 coarsely serrate leaflets, late into leaf & early to fall. Flowers before the leaves, developing into bunches of 'keys'. Vigorous grower, best on deep moist to wet soils but tolerates much drier soils, enjoys limestone. Valuable light coloured hardwood timber for tool handles, sports goods, and joinery. Steams and bends well. Coppices readily, producing straight poles and rods. Great firewood, burns cut green.

Broadly columnar, deciduous. Leaves and shoots densely clothed with grey, velvety down. Suited to dry climates and summer heat. Yellow autumn colour. Used as an understock.
