Large deciduous important commercial timber tree in S.E. USA. Growing on dry acidic and nutrient poor soils. Cold hardy, heat tolerant. Branch wood high calorific value for fuel. Reddish-brown autumn colour later than other oaks.

A deciduous hybrid oak thriving in moist soil but tolerating drier sites. Cold hardy with yellow to brown autumn colours. Occurs naturally in the NE USA where the two species occur.

S.E.USA. Broadly columnar, deciduous. Fast growing, massive, valuable timber tree, from poorly-drained valley floors and slopes, with mild, short winters and hot humid summers. Yellow-brown leaves in autumn. Acorns eaten by deer and American wildlife. Rare in NZ.
