Endemic to mountains of Japan. Open branched deciduous tree. Very long terminal trusses of flowers followed by winged samaras, often flat and empty. A.utumn colour yellow. A distinct species not closely related to other maples.

Albania and Nth Greece. Broadly conical, deciduous. Large palmate compound leaves produce a dense shade. Large creamy white flowers, then prickly oval fruits, enclosing polished conkers prized by schoolboys in the UK. Best in fertile soils.

S.E. USA. Large shrub, small tree, deciduous with a rounded habit. Long panicles of rich scarlet flowers make this the most beautiful of the "buckeye" group. Hardy and rare.
