Broadly spreading, deciduous. Grown for timber in Europe and widely used for hedging. Clips well. Light green in spring, golden copper in autumn and brown leaves retained all winter. Apply a heavy dressing of lime on clay soils. 2 years old - HEDGE spacing 40-60cm

European hornbeam (2 yrs old) Ht 15-20m
Broadly spreading, deciduous. A tough hedgerow and woodland tree. Popular for trimmed formal hedges. The timber is very hard and used for turnery. Yellow autumn colour. We also recommend Fagus sylvatica as a good alternative for a clipped hedge. 2 year olds - HEDGE spacing 30-60cm

Japan. Broadly spreading, deciduous, a major timber tree. Separated from Q. mongolica in 2006, accepted as new species. Tints of orange and red in autumn. Cold hardy.
