Mapiu hybrid poplar (female) Ht 30m
P.maximowiczii from Hokkaido x fastigiate P. nigra from Turkey (not Lombardy). smooth barked, good disease and possum resistance. Good stem form & branching for pruning. Frost & wind tolerant but not suitable for coastal sites. Growing well in inland Canterbury. Wood density 313 kg/m3 Cuttings 40cm, Rooted topped @ 1m.

Japan & E. Asia. Round headed small deciduous tree with arching branches. Flowers in spring arewhite or pale pink opening from crimson buds. 1cm apples are red or yellow.

Broadly columnar, deciduous. An artificial cross producing an attractive young tree with drooping branchlets and bronzy-red autumn colours. Ultimate size not known. Elm timber is prized for furniture.

The Japanese Stewartia is a tree found in most Arboretums around the world due to it's ornamental peeling bark and camelia-like flowers. Added to this is the stunning red-orange autumn colours. As a forest dweller it's not a tree for an exposed position.
