Chinese golden larch Ht to 40m in wild

E. China. Tall deciduous conifer with whorled branches. 15-30 green umbrella-like spreading needles on the shoot tip, turning orange-yellow in autumn. Growth is slow in NZ, and the tree is winter hardy in the UK. Seed raised, rarely available.

Taller, stronger stock for sheltered sites with vigorous weed growth. This stock undamaged by -10C in our Wakefield nursery. On new land mix with larch, Douglas fir or cypress to inoculate with mycorrhiza. Valuable timber when pruned. Cut stumps re-sprout.

Sierra redwood Ht 35-45m

Narrowly conical, evergreen. Withstands colder, drier and windier conditions than S. sempervirens. Growing to large size in the South Island. Mix with Larix or Pseudotsuga in plantations. Stumps do not resprout.
