Corsica, central and S. Italy. Broadly conical, deciduous. Popular for horticultural shelterbelts. Trims well into a narrow tall hedge. Roots penetrate deeply and so do not spread sideways into valuable crops. Drought tolerant.

Broadly conical, deciduous. Vigorous growth and good form. Habitat beside rivers and will grow in very wet places. Tolerates salt winds better than the other alders. Good firewood crop to utilise wet ground. Timber durable under water.

Alnus subcordata

Caucasian alder Ht 25-30m

South Russia and Iran. Broadly conical, deciduous. Vigorous grower. Our trees raised from seed from Valdivia University arboretum in Chile. Leaves are long and tapered with quite a reddish tinge. Flushing early August, month ahead of A. cordata.
